Doctoral thesis defense

A PhD defense must have been approved at a formal follow-up meeting and documented in an ISP. If suitable, the documentation can formulate conditional approval that can be finalized by the examiner. To arrange a Doctoral thesis defense at CSE the supervisor needs to follow these instruction:

• Notification of defense of a thesis must be submitted, by the main supervisor, no later than 4 months prior to the planned date, read more about how to apply for approval of committee and opponent for a PhD defense.
  

  All PhD defences (not only at CSE) must take place during term time (last week of August - one week before midsummer) and during normal working hours. If you have particular reasons, you may be allowed to have your PhD defense outside of this period. Please include this in communication to us as soon as possible.

  We usually do not hold more than one defense (Licentiate, mid-term seminar, or PhD) in on day. Dates booked and preliminarily booked for Licentiate and thesis defense are presented on the joint calendar “CSE Lic&Disp”. The calendar is available as a shared calendar if you want to add it to your outlook calendar profile. Look there when you start to plan your event and contact PhD admin for reservations.

• It is important that the opponent and the grading committee are given enough time to look at the thesis draft and that there is enough time to implement possible changes. For this reason, the thesis should be sent out for assessment no later than three months before the defense, and written statements should be sent to the supervisor, to the vice head of department for PhD education (vprefphd.cse@chalmers.se), and to the operational support for PhD education (phdadm.cse@chalmers.se) no later than two months before the defense. A simple e-mail is sufficient, stating whether or not the thesis is considered of sufficient quality to be defended. • Four weeks before the defense the PhD student must also print  the thesis. Information about layout and printing differs between Chalmers and GU, see specific information further down on this page.
• No later than four weeks before the defense the PhD students must publish their work on the preferred web. For GU it's GUPEA Links to an external site. and for Chalmers it's Chalmers research Links to an external site.
• Three weeks before the defense the thesis must be distributed.

The student is normally in charge of reserving a lecture hall for the defense.
