SJM080 Ship handling and navigation in confined waters SP3 2021 (7,5hp)

Revised December 17th, 2020

Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences

Course purpose

The purpose of the course is to gain thorough knowledge in planning, executing and monitoring controlled turns and passages in restricted areas such as archipelagos using all available means. The course also covers knowledge about the controllable, semi-controllable and uncontrollable forces involved in ship handling and to improve the skills in maintaining control of a ship. Theory is illustrated with practical exercises in the simulator and training vessel where course participants are trained to handle ships in confined waters, berthing/un-berthing (with and without the assistance of tug boats), meeting/overtaking and anchoring.

Additionally the course is covering man over board manoeuvres according to IAMSAR Vol.III and refreshes the knowledge of the COLREGs.
