Course purpose
The aim of the course is to provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience in technology and technology-based innovation processes with a focus on management of technology and knowledge assets. The course focuses on how patents and other IPRs design the resource base, capacity to manage claims and organizing work, as well as implementing value creation models of technological innovations. Said capabilities are critical for entrepreneurs and other people in executive positions in order to facilitate strategic and sustainable decision making in knowledge-based business and operations.

Course design
Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars and group work. Students mainly work consist of identifying various types of technology-based innovation logics in order to assess how to claim innovations and control the key assets for the further utilization. A large part of the course is conducted through group work where students form interdisciplinary study groups. The teaching is based on role-play pedagogy that focus on roles, capabilities and norms in simulated innovation environments. The aim is to give students a holistic picture about the role of patents and other intellectual property rights, as well as other external information, in technology-based innovation processes.

Questionnaire
The questionnaire takes place in the first part of the course as a part of the total examination. The purpose of the questionnaire is for the student to demonstrate familiarity the basic parts of subject relating to the initial parts of the course where the focus is on the fundamentals of innovation, patents and patenting. The questionnaire gives an individual grade.
Group hand-ins
The course contains a case divided in two parts where the students are above all tested in their ability to apply the learnings in a role-play-setting. The first part focus on the assessment and governance of a research-based innovation, while the second part focus on the management of a technology-based firm. The groups are examined as teams for this part of the examination.
Individual hand-in
The individual hand in is based on the complete course material including theory and exercises. The purpose is to enable the student to display understanding of the subject, skills in analysis, as well as communicative skills.
Plagiarism
All work handed in for examination must have been produced by the ones claiming to have produced the work. The written assignments are scanned through the ‘URKUND’ plagiarism check. By submitting an assignment for grading you acknowledge that you have read and understood the rules regarding plagiarism and its consequences.
Course Grade
Thus, the students are graded on their performances in the form of participation in the group assignment, a questionnaire, and a written hand in (see the examination activities above). Grading for specific course elements follows the principle that at least 40% of the maximum points for that examination moment must be accomplished to pass that examination moment. All students must pass all examination moments. The sum of those grades gives the final grade for the student according to the rules; Grading CIP061 (Chalmers. The final grade for the PIE course CIP061 is determined based on the total sum of points earned as described in figure 1. The final grade for the course is determined by using the following scale: Grade 0 – 39,5 = U, 40 – 59,5 = 3, 60 – 79,5 = 4, 80 – 100 = 5.
Course evaluation
The course will be evaluated upon completion. The results of the evaluation will be communicated to the students and will function as a guide for the development of the course.
