Examination August 19

The examination thesis will be uploaded under Files on the course home page in Canvas at 14:00 on August 19.

Zoom link to the examination: https://chalmers.zoom.us/j/62706348755

The Zoom room will open at 13:00 on August 19. You should enter the Zoom room not later than 45 min before the examination starts, i.e. 13:15, for fast and effective ID control.

When you have answered your exam, you should:

1. Write name, social security number (personnummer), e-mail address and total number
of pages on the first page, and your name on all of the remaining pages.

2. Scan your answers (with e.g. Whitelines) and make one pdf-file of your answers.

3. Upload the pdf-file on the KTK012 home page in Canvas under Assignment "Exam August 19"
before 18:30. The Assignment "Exam" closes at 18:30 and you will not be able to submit
    your exam after that.

For students with approved extra time, use the Assignment "Exam August 19 for students with
extra time" before 20:45. The Assignment "Exam for students with extra time" closes at
20:45 and you will not be able to submit your exam after that.

Course-PM

KTK012 Catalysis lp4 VT21 (7.5 hp)

The course is offered by the department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Course purpose

The overall aim of the course is to provide understanding of the basic and applied aspects of the phenomenon catalysis and important industrial applications of heterogeneous catalysis. The level of understanding should be such that the students in their profession as engineers should be able to participate in discussions regarding selection of catalysts, methods to prepare and characterize catalysts, and methods to avoid catalyst deactivation.

Schedule

See separate file (under files) with course PM and detailed schedule.

The course starts on Tuesday March 23 at 08:00

Course literature

Heterogeneous Catalysis –Fundamentals and Applications (Elsevier 2012) by Julian R.H. Ross (available at Chalmers library as e-book).

Course design

Content

The course starts with the fundamentals of catalysis, aiming for understanding of the correlation between surface structure, catalytic properties, and choice of materials and preparation methods to produce industrial catalysts. Methods to characterize chemical and physical properties of heterogeneous catalysts are described, and mechanisms for deactivation of industrial catalysts as well as methods to avoid catalyst deactivation, are explained.

Organization

The course includes a lecture series and an applied project work carried out in a group under the supervision of a researcher in the field.

Learning objectives and syllabus

  • Describe the basics of catalytic activity and selectivity.
  • Describe chemical and physical properties of catalytically active materials.
  • Exemplify industrial applications where catalysis is of central importance.
  • Describe the structure of industrial catalysts and synthesis methods for preparation of heterogeneous catalysts.
  • Explain mechanisms for deactivation of heterogeneous catalysts and describe methods to avoid catalyst deactivation.
  • Describe methods to characterize chemical and physical properties of heterogeneous catalysts.
  • Carry out an applied project work in the area including planning, experimental, interpretation, documentation, and presentation.
