Course purpose
The purpose of the course, Chalmers MMA 151 - Ship Design Project, at the Department of Shipping and Marine Technology, is to let the students participate in a real problem oriented ship, offshore or yacht design project and to provide knowledge on and understanding of engineering work and various design methods relevant to problem oriented ship design work. Within the course, naval architectural theories and skills gained at earlier courses shall be applied.
The objective of the project work is to result in a comprehensive Concept Vessel Design outlined in a specification, including relevant technical documents, defining a marine operation system that fulfils the requirements and needs of a client.
This compendium is intended for the course as guidance of the work and together with the client basic specification constitutes an initial specification of requirements for the actual design task.
Schedule
Course literature
In addition to course literature as referred to in previous courses within the Programme in Naval Architecture, hand-outs, scientific papers as well as relevant standards issued by Regulatory Bodies are utilized.
Moreover, the following literature may provide enhanced information with regard to Ship Design Work:
- Ramne, B.: Handbook in execution of a Ship Design Project at Chalmers University of technology
- Schneekluth, H. and Bertram, V.: Ship Design for Efficiency and Economy (2nd Edition) 1998, Butterworth and Heinemann, ISBN 0 7506 4133 9
- Papanokolaou, A.: Ship Design, Methodologies of Preliminary Design 2014, Springer Dordrecht Heidelberg New York, ISBN 978 94 017 8751 2
- Hansson, K-J.: The cost of different propulsion concepts for a product tanker 2021, Chalmers University of Technology
Course design
The course is executed during the autumn semester, 1st and 2nd quarter, and corresponds to 15 HEC units. The course comprises three lectures and/or guided project work session per week. Exam is passed through attendance at the mandatory lectures and activities as detailed within this guidance in addition to performance in the practical project work. It should be mentioned that, in addition to the scheduled lectures and work sessions, extensive efforts are required by all students.
The Ship Design Project shall be summarized in a written report and also presented orally to an audience comprising managers and engineers from the maritime industry.

Learning objectives and syllabus
Learning objectives:
- Apply his/her knowledge and understanding, and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to Naval Architecture
- Participate and contribute to a design process as a member of a team
- Follow a systems engineering approach
- Plan and design a complex product like a commercial ship/offshore structure within given time frames
- Propose new concepts and designs to meet customer requests, transport needs and limitations
- Explain, analyse and use methodologies required in the design process of a marine structure
- Express, discuss and motivate results and conclusions as well as the knowledge behind these, both orally and in written text.
- Take responsibility for the product (the vessel) being designed in accordance with the applicable international rules and regulations for classification of ships.
- Take responsibility for the product (the vessel) complying with applicable safety and environmental standards as well as being able to discuss the implications of these on the design.
- Be able to discuss aspects of sustainability and ethics based on the product's impact on society
