Course syllabus
SSY267 Advanced topics in biomedical engineering lp2 HT21 (7.5 hp)
Course organization:
The course work is organized in projects. Each project consists of 2-4 students that perform their work together with a supervisor. In each project contains the following parts:
• A literature review in the field of the project. You search for relevant research papers, analyze and evaluate the content. You summarize and obtain knowledge of the field in general and describe the state-of-the art in the field. You should obtain knowledge of alternative and competing methods to the one used in your project. You should learn about the motivation for your project and learn details of the project that you are going to work in.
• Together with your supervisor you define the project, agree upon methods and define the goals. You plan and perform the project independently, and you analyze and evaluate the results.
• Write a report containing the literature review and a description of the project work and its results. The report is due in the exam week in January. The report can be in a standard report or in form of a scientific paper. • Present your work orally in a workshop. The presentation will be held during the ordinary exam week in January. We will decide the date based on a doodle poll among the students. Learning outcome After the course the student should be able to: • Describe state of the art in the sub-area of biomedical engineering selected for study
• Show a deeper knowledge in the sub-area of biomedical engineering selected for study
• Read and review research papers in an effective way.
• Critically analyze the content of the paper and evaluate its significance, importance and relevance to the research field.
• Perform independent literature review: Given a scientific problem in the sub-area, the student should be able to find the most relevant papers in the professional literature, review and analyze them.
• Independently perform a research pre-study, in the form of a literature study or a limited research assignment. Independently analyze the results from the study and evaluate the potential for the proposed research project.
Grading
You will be given a grade on the scale U, 3, 4, 5. The grading will be based on the written report, the oral presentation and your individual performance and contribution to the project. You will be asked to hand in a contribution report, you will also be asked to judge the performance of the other students in your project.
