Course purpose

ARK 350, Sustainable Building: Competition is a close to practice course, communicating and training skills and competences for participating in architectural competitions with a strong environmental and social agenda. The course is open for students of architecture together with students of engineering and architectural engineering, to develop a competition entry, the way how it happens in advanced practice.

Overall theme is sustainable transformation and resilience and the chosen location is Alafors, a village with 1850 inhabitants, 25 km from Gothenburg.

Course design

The course supports innovation and speculative ideas for a creative spatial program and building proposals, which are grounded on thorough investigations, different calculations and simple simulations concerning daylight, energy, green-house gases and global warming potential, water, life cycle costs etc.

The course is supported by workshops on daylight and energy/life cycle tools according schedule. You learn and exercise these tools for daylight investigations as well as for preliminary energy calculations and Life Cycle Assessment of your proposal.

The goal is designing an architectural project in one of the existing buildings, based on investigation and with support of these tools. To win a competition, a clear and comprehensible communication to a jury is necessary, so there will be inputs and support to optimize graphic and verbal communication.

The final delivery is an architectural project on competition scale (minimum 3 posters), connected to a technical report, which documents environmental calculations and data. Like last year and after the final presentations, a qualified external jury discusses all projects, and all groups can watch this close to real jury session.

The course starts with investigating and analyzing the buildings of Alafors spinneri in context to the village and there is an on-site visit. This investigation will be supported by local stakeholders and a former student, who shares his extensive research beforehand. The outcome will be programmatic ideas for an incremental development process of the buildings, with focus on needed housing.

ALL INFORMATION HAPPENS ON CANVAS.  THE LECTURES, DETAILS OF TUTORIALS LIKE GROUP ORDER, REQUIREMENTS ETC. WILL BE SPECIFIED BY THE EXAMINER ON CANVAS, THE WEEK BEFORE THEY HAPPEN .
