Course literature
- There is 1, sometimes 2 journal articles assigned for each lecture as mandatory course literature. The artcles are uploaded on Canvas on beforehand and discussed during the lecture.
- For scoring highest points at the oral exam, the student needs to clearly show he/she has grasped the articles supporting the lectures as well.
- Students are encouraged to read the articles on beforehand.
- Teachers may also provide supplementary reading; this will not be part of the exam.
Course design
The course consists of lectures, self-study of literature, review / critique of scientific journal articles, two individual assignments, group reflections and a group assignment and presentation of this. Some lectures are given by invited international experts and the course also contains a study visit.

Learning objectives and syllabus
Learning objectives:
- Design and plan the execution of an advanced laboratory project, incl. computer aided design of nucleic acid constructs.
- Be able to connect fundamental studies in molecular and synthetic biology to biotechnological applications.

Examination form
- Oral exam: 50 points – need to get at least 10.
- Quizzes: 5 + 5 bonus points
- Journal clubs 10 + 10 points. Need to get 10 for passing the module.
- In silico project: 30 points in total; 20 for written report and 10 for oral presentation – need to get at least 15 for passing the module.
- Grades: 50 points: 3; 65 points: 4; 80 points: 5
