SSY145 Wireless networks lp4 VT23 (7.5 hp)

Course is offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering

Lecture room and hybrid online lecture link

All lectures will be in room ES51, Linsen, EDIT building.

In addition to the lecture on campus at Chalmers in ES51, we also provide a hybrid lecture format, but we encourage that you join the class in ES51 as often as possible, since there is big values in interacting with the lecturer and your class mates on campus.

  • Connect and follow remotely in case you are sick or for other reason cannot join on campus.
  • Record the lecture to assist your learning being able to go back to the lecture.

As a course representative it is your responsibility to:

  • Inform yourself about the views of your fellow students.
  • Pass these on together with your own views in the meetings.
  • Suggest course-specific questions, if needed.
  • Inform your fellow students about discussions and recommendations at the meetings.

Eligibility:

In order to be eligible for a second cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme that owns the course. (If the second cycle course is owned by a first cycle programme, second cycle entry requirements apply.)
Exemption from the eligibility requirement: Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling these requirements.

Course specific prerequisites

Basic courses in random processes, data communication, and computer networks are recommended.

Aim

This course focuses on wireless data communications including wireless Internet. The students acquire knowledge into the current and future state-of-the-art of technology in the field of wireless communications. Another goal of the course is to ensure that student can explain the impact of commercial, political, and regulatory factors on the design of wireless systems. The course will treat current relevant technologies, and the exact content may change from year to year.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Explain how wireless systems should be designed to successfully carry various information
  • Explain the fundamentals about wireless security
  • Describe the main technologies used in modern wireless network to provide QoS and fairness
  • Describe the most important standardization and spectrum regulation bodies, how they interact, and how they impact the design of technical systems
  • Write a report about a current hot topic by identifying and studying the appropriate literature
  • Orally present an overview of the literature covering a current hot topic.

Content

  • Background
  • Short introduction to wireless communications
    • Limitations imposed by the wireless channel
    • Countermeasures to overcome these limitations
  • Overview and analysis of modern wireless networks
  • Overview of spectrum regulation bodies
  • Overview of wireless system standardisation bodies
  • Effective techniques for oral presentations
  • Current hot topics (will change from year to year)

Organisation

The course is comprised of approximately 18 lectures, workshops, and one project related to a current hot topic. A significant part of the lectures are guest lectures given by industry experts. This is complemented by more lectures on fundamentals given by academics.

Literature

To be decided.

Examination

The final grade (TH) is based on scores from the project, quizzes, and the written exam. The project, quizzes and the written exam are mandatory in the sense that they must be passed to pass the course.
