Course specific prerequisites
Knowledge and skills corresponding to the intended learning outcomes in the following courses:
- SJM097 Safety and Safety Officer on Board
Purpose
The aim of the course is to increase the students' ability to take an active part in the operational management and work on board Ro-Ro passenger vessels (RoPax) and cruise vessels as Officer of the Watch (OOW). As well as providing an understanding of human factors and leadership on board, with special focus on the vessel's safety work, emergency, and crisis organisation including management of large groups of passengers and crew.
Learning objectives
On completion of the course, the student should have/be able to:
- Theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the organizations and management structures on board passenger / cruise ships.
- Knowledge of policies and procedures specific to the passenger / cruise ships.
- Knowledge and practical skills specific for vessel operations for passenger / cruise ships
- Theoretical knowledge in crisis management for rating-course Crowd and Crisis Management, CCM
- Plan a voyage from port A to Port B for a cruising vessel with respect to navigation and normal operation
- Plan and execute safety exercises for a large crew
- Present documentation from all parts of the voyage according to industry standard for a control body
- Identify ergonomic principles and understand of how this affects the performance of the operator.
- Understand the limitations and abilities of the operators on board and understanding what influences good communication.

The course consists of three parts with a focus on RoPax and Cruise Vessels:
- Part A Human factors
- Part B Organisation, Safety and Crisis Management
- Part C Planning & Execution of a Voyage
Part A
Study period: 2
Form of teaching: Lectures and seminars, and guest lecturer
Examination: Take-home exam, during exam period for LP 2
Compulsory attendance: Minimum 80% attendance at lectures and 100% attendance at seminars
