Course purpose

The aim of the course is to advance and to deepen the insight into residential and housing architectural design. The focus is put on conceptual rethinking and sustainable design solutions of contemporary housing architecture that will be applied to a limited project set in Göteborg and/or in another context. Cooperation is established with external part(s), for example housing companies, municipalities or SABO, in order to develop a joint climate of experimental invention in a search for new relevant architectural qualities of residence. The studio is part of the work in the Center for Housing Architecture (CBA) at Chalmers and studio deliveries will be presented in seminars and lectures as part of the CBA activities.

Course design

Course process

The course is implemented through three phases, Exercises, Concept and framework, and Design. All three phases include lectures.

The first phase including exercises composes an introduction to the design work. The exercises focus on knowledge and understanding of design solutions and theories about housing inventions and sustainable housing design, which are understood and developed through design sketches. The exercises relate to relevant themes as extreme housing, circularity, sustainable energy- and CO2 solutions, flexible housing, and more. The exercises are carried out in groups and followed up with presentations and briefings.

The second phase comprises the development of a design concept and theoretical framework for the design work. Laboratory and theoretical studies are iterated through the work process. Reference examples and theory supporting sustainable design and inventions are researched and developed further through synthesis and transformations to form the design concept and the theoretical framework. The concept and framework phase intends to provide a clear approach to the design work and is therefore an important part of the work process. The work is performed individually and in groups and is followed up with presentations and briefings.

In the final phase the design of a housing scheme is implemented, where learning and experiences from the two previous phases lay the foundation. The work process during this phase is exploratory and includes workshops, sketch work and tutorials in groups or individually. The work process ends with the submission, critique including discussions and feedback, and a session for course reflection. The course can also include a study trip visiting examples of sustainable and innovative housing.

Learning objectives and syllabus

Knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergent issues affecting professional practice and social/ environmental sustainability relevant for housing design.

Competence and skills

  • Demonstrate a widened perspective of the urban dwelling and use this as an essential tool in housing research and housing design.
  • Apply widened insights on experimental and innovative best practices in the European context to future housing designs to foster innovation.
  • Perform advanced architectural analysis on housing situations and produce adequate solutions to emerging new potential future demands on the housing market.
  • Creatively and critically design Housing Projects that takes its starting point in a sustainable development from environmental, social and economic aspects.
  • Design Housing Projects integrated with the surrounding environment and urban setting, and demonstrate capacity to interact with real stakeholders and clients.
  • Demonstrate the capacity for teamwork and to communicate to different stakeholders and colleagues, via presentations, using the entire repertoire of architectural media and methods, to present the reasoning and work conclusions

Judgement and approach

  • Interpret, question and develop given prerequisites based on achieved knowledge and experience, and to show intention, commitment, and ability to identify needs for further knowledge and undertake on-going development of the students own skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to adopt a holistic view in making judgements and appraisals informed by the relevant disciplinary, social, and ethical aspects on current societal factors influencing residential design and to integrate the needs of diverse user groups as a fundament for proposals of long-term and high aesthetic quality.

Examination form

Examination is executed and assessed with a final critique with presentations of submitted housing schemes, with reactions through feedback and discussions by students, teachers and examiner.

The submitted housing scheme presents the students’ complete design work, elaborating for example drawings, visualizations, diagrams, text and models/concept and framework/work process review.

The final critique comprehends several learning objectives, which makes this a critical part of the course. In this moment the executed design work is explained and motivated by the student together with employed methods and theories. The design is also communicated through drawings, visualizations, diagrams and models together with oral presentations. The final critique with questions and discussions also contribute to critical thinking and knowledge building through the cavalcade of demonstrated housing schemes. The moment implies deepened insights into sustainable solutions and inventions for residential and housing architectural design for all parts participating.

Requirements for approved course

Two moments are mandatory for approved course; submitted and approved housing scheme graded 3 or higher, and attendance in the final critique moment with presentations and discussions.

Grades

Assessment is made according to the following:

Failed (F): The project is clearly unviable. Significant parts of the requested material are missing in the project report and presentations.

Grade 3: The project is carried out at an acceptable level and is feasible. No parts are missing (additions can be discussed).

Grade 4: The project is well executed and well feasible. All parts of the project report and presentations are included and are well implemented.

Grade 5: The project is very well executed and very well feasible. All parts of the project report and presentations are included and are very well implemented.
