Knowledge and skills corresponding to the intended learning outcomes in the following courses:
- SJM097 Safety and Safety Officer on Board
Purpose
The aim of the course is to provide the student with understanding and knowledge of the operational management and leadership on board a passenger ship, with a special focus on passenger ship emergency/crisis organization as well as on management of large groups of passengers and crew.
The course should broaden students' proficiency in all parts of the operative work as officer of the watch (OOW) on board a ship.
The aim of the course is to give students a basic understanding of human factors in the maritime domain
Learning objectives
On completion of the course, the student should have/be able to:
- Identify ergonomic principles and understand how this affects the performance of the operator.
- Understand the limitations and abilities of the operators on board and understanding what influences good communication.
- Explain organisation, management structures, policy and procedures on board Passenger/ROPAX/cruise ships
- Apply passenger/ROPAX/cruise ship specific operations.
- Apply knowledge regarding crisis management for the qualification course Crowd and Crisis Management (CCM)
- Plan and execute vessel type specific operations during a voyage as part of bridge crew including compiling/present documentation in accordance with industry standard for control bodies.
- Interpret and apply regulations for Passenger/ROPAX/cruise ships.

- "Crowd and Crisis Management" (CCM) – Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen)
- “Polar code basic”
Content and Organization
The course consists of three parts with a focus on RoPax and Cruise Vessels:
- Part A Human factors
- Part B Organisation and Safety
- Part C Planning & Execution of a Voyage & Crisis Management
Part A
Study period: 2
Form of teaching: Lectures and seminars, and guest lecturer
Examination: Take-home exam, during exam period for LP 2
Compulsory attendance: Minimum 80% attendance at lectures and 100% attendance at seminars
