Objective:

The students shall understand the complexity of integrating different professional disciplines as well as engaging stakeholders in the design process in order to be able to develop skills in managing the design process in the construction sector. The long-term objective of the course is to add to the development of design management as a value adding activity.

In this course, the focus is on design management related to digital construction and Building Information Modeling (BIM). In this context, a new approach called “Total BIM” has started to emerge, which supports drawing-less and model-based design and construction. The BIM becomes the dynamic single source of information on the construction site. This approach sets new demands, changes, and impacts the design process, construction process and management practices. Therefore, it´s important to understand the opportunities and implications in both the design process and its management.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this course the students shall be able to:

  • Understand and be able to describe:
    • the complex challenges of a multidisciplinary process of design and digital construction
    • the role of the design management process in digital construction
    • to discuss the challenges in the design management process
    • the Building Information Modeling (BIM) and “Total BIM” approach and its opportunities and implications in the design process and the management of it
    • the new approach Total BIM (i.e drawing-less and model-based design and construction)

  • Be familiar with and able
    • to describe and discuss the roles and actors in the design processes
    • to discuss digital construction and the design processes and actions in it
    • to describe, use and discuss design methodology and digital tools
    • to take part in a multi-disciplinary team of building-design
    • to describe and discuss project management using BIM in the design process
    • to describe opportunities and implications with Total BIM
    • to describe and discuss Total BIM and how it disrupts the design and construction processes

Content Description

The course contains lectures addressing design theory, design methods and design tools, including BIM, focusing on how they are managed to lead and manage the design process.

Project tasks and exercises designed to teach the student to elements of the design process. Collaboration, communication and integration between different disciplines are the focus.

Assignments:

Assignment Part 1:  See separate document “BOM 186 Assignment Part 1”, at Canvas.

Assignment Part 2:  See separate document “BOM 186 Assignment Part 2”, at Canvas.

Computer Labs: BIMLab 1-10 see separate document at Canvas under “BIM Labs” and Total BIM project.

BIM project: Automatic BIM-Based Quality Control: See separate document at Canvas under “BIM project: Automatic BIM-Based Quality Control”.

Total BIM project: See separate document at Canvas under “Total BIM project: BIM Labs 7-10.

For students that have taken “BOM240 Ingenjörsmetodik CAD” and ”ARK212 Digitala verktyg – BIM”: Students that have taken BIM courses “BOM240 Ingenjörsmetodik CAD” and “ARK212 Digitala verktyg – BIM” earlier will have some repetition and notice some overlapping in the beginning of the course BIMlabs 1-5. In that case you could do some repetition of BIM lab 1-5 and then make BIM-lab 6-10 + BIM project + Total BIM project.

EXAMINATION

The course is graded Pass/No Pass.

Assignment part 1 is graded no pass/pass. It is a compulsory assignment. If not completed a complementing assignment will have to be done.

Assignment Part 2 is graded no pass/pass. To pass the course both assignments have to be completed. Grading criteria for assignment 2 are described in document describing assignment 2.

Computer Labs, is graded no pass/pass.  (BIM lab 1-10, BIM project and Total BIM project)
