Course purpose
The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge, skills and understanding in scientific presentation, and opposition on academic reports on sustainable shipping. During the course, course participants' skills in communication of research and knowledge about the philosophy of research and use of research methods will be further developed.

Course design
The course is organized around lectures, guest lectures (mandatory), two seminars a literature seminar (mandatory), and a project presentation/ opposition seminar (mandatory), a project assignment (mandatory), and supervision.
Lectures
The course comprises four lectures which all are based on the course literature and recommended literature. Attendance during lectures is strictly recommended.
Guest lectures
The course includes two guest lectures (Mandatory).
- Guest lecture 1: Academic language and use of language markers
- Guest lecture 2: Ethical aspects in performing research study
Seminars
The course includes two seminars (Mandatory)
Seminar 1 Analyzing a published scholarly paper
The seminar aims to improve knowledge academic writing based on the analysis of a published scholarly paper. The seminar takes its starting point in starting point in knowledge and skills in conduction a literature review (e.g., SJO369 Research Methods, MMS046 project management, SJO838 Risk and safety management).
Seminar 2 project opposition and presentation seminar
- Oral presentation and defence of project report assignment
- Max 20 min including 5 mins for questions from the audience
- Opposition on another project report
- Max 10 min.
Project assignment (mandatory)
The project assignment is mandatory and takes it starting point in studies of social and environmentally sustainable shipping. The purpose of the project assignment is to deepen knowledge and understanding in academic writing, presentation, and opposition on a scientific work. The project assignment must be:
- Conducted in groups of 2 students/ group.
- Scientifically supported with academic references with at least 15 scholarly papers
- Reported as a project report,
- Sent on Canvas. Allowed file types: doc, docx.
- Total length: 10 000 words (min) max 12 000 (words) references (or 10-12 pages)
4. Orally presented and defended during 20 min at a seminar (see above )
5. Opposition on another project report
- Opposition report; approx. 1200-2000 words (max) and handed in on canvas
- Oral opposition during 10 min a seminar (see above)
Project supervision
Project supervision in class will occur at two occasions
- Mandatory participation applies for ALL students during the entire length of seminars applies to ALL seminars (i.e. if you leave the seminar earlier- you will not pass the course)
- Students are requested to be well-prepared for an up-coming supervision
- Students are required to respect set deadlines for sending in assignments
- Usage of AI-tools in conducting the project assignment and writing the project report is strictly forbidden/ not allowed. - Failed examined course elements (including sending in project assignment report, opposition and presentation of project assignment) will be re-examined during the re-examination period of the course.
For a final grade on the course all examination requirements must be passed. The final grade of the course is set by the project assignment. Failure on any of the examination elements will be examined during the re-examination period of the course.

Knowledge and comprehension
- Explain the use of scientific, grey literature, and non- scientific sources in communicating research on social and environmental sustainability.
- Describe barriers and opportunities in development of sustainable shipping
- Explain ethical aspects in performing research study
- Describe analysis of academic works in sustainable shipping
- Describe skills and knowledge required to continue the subject under study
- Describe development of sustainable shipping based on concepts used in maritime management
Application
- Apply methods used for review of scientific literature and regulatory guidelines
- Perform a research project ins sustainable shipping
- Perform oral presentation of an academic report.
- Perform oral and written opposition on an academic report/ work.

Examination form
The examination consists of the following elements:
Seminars (2 ECT)
- Literature seminar, (1ECT), Graded: Pass (P)-Fail (F
- Project presentation and opposition seminar, (1ECT), Graded: Pass (P)-Fail (F)
Project assignment (5,5ECT)
- Project report, (4,5ECT), Graded: Pass (P)-Fail (F)
- Project opposition report (1ECT), Graded: Pass (P)-Fail (F)
