Course purpose

Construction projects are the central unit of production of the built environment. To manage a construction project is probably the single most important competence for the critical and skilled design and construction project management scholar. Being a project manager is the first and most widespread management task that DCPM scholar are engaged with. Management of construction project is a mature area with numerous standards, certifications, and educations. Yet projects are often delayed, run over budget and do not deliver the expected quality. The course seeks to cover both apparent extremes, the straight “pearls on a string” process and the winding, rocky emergent one.

The course "Project management in construction" introduces the diversity and complexity of the construction sector and the role of projects and project manager. The course familiarizes the students with the vocabulary and concepts of project management and project management studies. It presents aspects of the project management body of knowledge by providing examples of necessary tools, methods and theories both prescriptive, analytical, and critical relevant for the discipline and the practitioners as the course illustrates moreover their application in concrete cases and projects. In doing so aspects of sustainability, ethics and social responsibility are discussed.
