About the course

The overall aim of this course is to, based on previous courses, provide the student with indepth knowledge of control and monitoring of processes using modern computerized systems. Furthermore, to provide an insight into modern communication between devices in distributed control and monitoring systems. A parallel aim is to give students a foundation in project implementation and training in setting up criteria, organize and carry out a projects.

Learning to develop automation systems is impossible without practical experience. This course is therefore a practical course where you develop control in a project and in various assignments. Throughout the course you will work together with one partner, and you two will do assignments and the project together. In the project you will also collaborate with three other pairs, forming a project team of 8 persons.

The central theme in the course is automation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automation. Wikipedia is dividing automation into feedback control (reglerteknik) and logical control. The focus in this course is on logical control, but some aspects of feedback control will also be included.

During the project, you will develop the control of an elevator and its doors, a user interface for monitoring and interacting with the system as well as documentation and a user manual. You will plan and coordiante the project using so called agile project managment methods, which you and I (the costumer) will use for tracking the progress and my (changing) requirements. Since my requirements may change throughout the project, you will need an active project team and flexible development.

All assignemnts and demo sessions are mandatory and is required for a final grade.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Understand various appraoches to project planning and executing.
- Solve a larger problem, in a systematic way in a project.
- Describe how a modern process control system is built.
- Understand the methodical break down and structuring of various sub-functions for control of a larger system.
- Apply these skills on a structured way of programming an industrial controller (PLC).
- Describe the recommendations for human interfaceing to process (HMI).
- Apply HMI by configure and build process graphics and process monitoring in industrial HMI systems.
- Describe the basics of data communication in industrial fieldbusses and Ethernet / TCP / IP.
- Applying industrial data communication by configuring the communication between controllers, operator systems and decentralized units.
- Explain the function of some commonly used control systems on ships (including the feed water control, viscosity control of fuel oil).
- Explain the importance of dimesioning control valve and the impact of valve wear in control circuits.
- Maintained principles and maintenance of computer systems and associated components on board ships.

Examination and grades

7.5 credits, grading:  TH - Five, Four, Three, Not passed

All mandatory tasks must be completed for passing the course. The grade is computed based on the three main deliverables:

Grade1: Elevator and doors assignment week 4: grading:  TH - Five, Four, Three, Not passed
Grade2: Final project demo: grading:  TH - Five, Four, Three, Not passed
Grade3: Report: grading:  Pass, Not passed
Grade4: PID-control: grading:  Pass, Not passed

The final grade is computed based on the following formula (with round half up):

(Grade1 + Grade2 ) / 2

Mandatory tasks

  • Demonstrate and hand in the codesys assignments in pairs
    • week 2 - Elevator based on the codesys introduction
    • week 4 - Elevator and doors (also graded)
    • week 6 - Black box pid-control  moved to project instead
  • Demo sessions of the project
    • week 7 - Final accaptence test as a project
  • Written project report
    • exam week - The written report and user manual
  • Individual hand in
    • An assesement and self evaluation, where you describe your part in the project work, pair work and your view of the other group members.

Groups

In this course you will work in a group of two. The same pair will do all assignments and project work together. You will also work in a bigger project group with up to 10 people later in the course. You join a group together by going to people and then the tab pair and join one of the groups that do not have anyone else (always join the group with the lowest number that is still free). Change the name of the group from pair x to jour two last names.
