MVE385/MSA520/MMA520 Project course in mathematical and statistical modelling
Course PM
This page contains the program of the course. Other information, such as learning outcomes, teachers, literature and examination, are in a separate course PM.
Course examiner: Alexei Heintz, heintz{at}chalmers.se
Teaching assistant in statistics: Felix Held, felix.held {at}chalmers.se
Program
The main idea of this course is that you should practice the role as mathematics/statistics consultants for industrial and research-related projects. The main part therefore consists of working on your projects within small groups of around 3 people, meeting with your external partners and with the course coordinator as necessary.
Working groups will be assigned with projects from the available list by the course coordinator according to groups preferences and experiences.
Chalmers introduced learning of ethical problems in engineering within this course. It will include 2-3 hours lectures on the topic and a workshop on this topic at the end of the course. Working groups will make short presentations about ethical questions in the relation with their work on their project and will take part in the follow up discussion with other groups. Some printed material on the topic will be supplied by the course coordinator.
Main areas of applications and methods for the projects are:
-
Image processing for material science
-
Deterministic data analysis and parametrization
-
Stochastic data analysis and parametrization
-
Discrete and continuous optimization
-
Classical mechanics models, ODE
-
Microfluidics for biological applications.
-
Simulation of transport processes in industry
-
Simulation of mass and heat transport in heterogeneous materials
Projects descriptions will be available from November 4 in Canvas within the assignment "Ranking projects" as files associated with the course .
Master projects (!)
Some enterprises are interested in students who like to choose a Master project as a continuation of their work on the course projects:
Group in Active Safety and Autonomous driving at Volvo Cars Corporation.
Matssons i Anderstorp AB - a private enterprise interested in using image recognition techniques for automatization of storage of various goods.
Project for Volvo Cars at the department of electrical engineering - on a model for modeling litium batteries for electric cars.
Check suggestion for these projects in the assignment Ranking projects.
The schedule of the course is in TimeEdit.

Course requirements
To pass the course you must
- Hand in a project plan for your project according to instructions.
- Hand in a preliminary report according to instructions for feedback
- Present your project results in an oral presentation (about 20 min)
- Report your project in a scientific report according to instructions.
- Take part in the presentation and discussion at the workshop on ethical problems in engineering. Alternatively students absent in the city at the time of the workshop can write an individual essay on the topic.
Examination
The course is passed when all course requirements are met (see above).
Grades will be given based mainly on the final project report and on the feedback from the industrial partners,
but oral presentations, participation in the workshop on ethics in engineering and work during the project will also be weighed in.
The report should be a full high-quality report written in English according to instructions.
