CIU180 / TIA187 Tangible Interaction

Tangible Interaction covers user interfaces where a person interacts with digital information using the physical environment. Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) intensively utilize three-dimensionality, physics, and the human body.

This course introduces concepts, methods, and technologies relevant for tangible user interfaces. Students who pass this course should be able to appreciate, create, and study tangible computing artifacts; at a level where they are able to self-sufficiently contribute to both commercial and academic projects.

 

Course Design

The course involves the following 5 kinds of activities (i.e. "modules"):

  • Lectures
    • During scheduled hours
  • Labs
    • During scheduled hours
  • Literature Seminars
    • During scheduled hours
  • Project
    • During scheduled hours, with teacher(s) present for questions etc.
    • During scheduled hours, unsupervised (equipment/space reserved)
    • On your own time
  • Research paper
    • On your own time

Teachers will be available to provide guidance outside of scheduled hours, upon request.

 

Grading

  • 60% – Project (Group Work)
    • 20pp – Participation, engagement, learning... as observed by the teachers and graded in periodic increments
    • 40pp – Peer-voting after final demo and presentation
  • 40% – Research paper (Individual Work)
    • 10pp – Format, language, etc.
    • 10pp – Relevance, "situatedness," design justification...
    • 10pp – Proper documentation/explanation of design/development/artifact/concept
    • 10pp – Evaluation, validation, use cases, future scenarios, learnings...
